Maldives-India agree on troop repatriation, no renewal of agreement: Muizzu
Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu declared on Monday that an agreement has been reached between India and the Maldives to repatriate the initial contingent of Indian troops stationed in the country before March 10 of this year.
During his inaugural address at the commencement of the final session of the 19th Parliament President Muizzu revealed ongoing discussions with India regarding the withdrawal of their troops.
Muizzu stated that the Indian Army will relocate its military personnel from one of the three aviation platforms in the Maldives by March 10, 2024, with the remaining two platforms set for evacuation by May 10.
Emphasizing his commitment to safeguarding the freedom and sovereignty of the Maldivian people President Muizzu highlighted the overwhelming support of the majority for his government's pledge to withdraw foreign troops, reclaim lost parts of Maldivian seas, and annul any agreements undermining the nation's sovereignty.
In his parliamentary address, President Muizzu announced plans to enhance the Maldives military's capability to maintain a 24-hour Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surveillance, reinforcing the nation's commitment to its territorial integrity.
The move signifies a strategic shift in the Maldives' defense strategy while underlining the government's dedication to assertive national security measures.
