Bangladesh to request review of new US tariff policy

Bangladesh will appeal for a review of the recently-announced reciprocal tariff by the United States to tackle the heated issue sweeping the world.

In addition to pursuing a review, Dhaka aims to expand its imports from the US in an effort to narrow the trade imbalance—one of the key factors cited by Washington in implementing the tariff measure that challenges the global trade framework established over the last 70 years.
Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus of the interim government will maintain direct communication with US authorities regarding the matter. He is expected to personally engage in discussions with Washington, according to Khalilur Rahman, the Chief Adviser’s senior representative.
These steps were decided during an emergency meeting led by the Chief Adviser at the state guest house Jamuna, convened two days after the US imposed a 37% tariff on Bangladeshi exports.
Speaking to the press following the meeting, Khalilur Rahman stated, “The 37% tariff was not entirely unexpected,” noting that the Chief Adviser had anticipated such a move.
Previously, Bangladeshi exports to the US, including the vital ready-made garment sector, were subject to a 15% tariff. Garments make up over 80% of Bangladesh’s total annual exports, with the US being the largest single market for these products.
Khalilur Rahman also shared that he had visited the United States in February, under the directive of the Chief Adviser, to discuss the issue with American officials. Ongoing communication with Washington continues, he added.
In 2024, Bangladesh exported approximately $8.4 billion worth of goods to the United States, with $7.34 billion comprising ready-made garments. In contrast, US exports to Bangladesh totaled around $2.2 billion, resulting in a $6.2 billion trade surplus in Bangladesh's favor.
