IMF mission reaffirms support to Bangladesh economy

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Bangladesh in implementing essential reforms and policy measures to address emerging economic challenges.

In a statement concluding a recent mission to Bangladesh, the IMF emphasized its backing for the government's efforts to make necessary policy adjustments. These include ongoing monetary tightening and reducing non-essential capital expenditures, aimed at managing the country's economic difficulties.
The IMF delegation, led by Chris Papageorgiou, Mission Chief for Bangladesh, visited Dhaka from September 24 to 30. During this visit, the team discussed recent economic developments and the government's priorities for reforms.
In addition to the ongoing 4.7 billion US dollar loan programme aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability and rebuilding depleting foreign exchange reserves, Bangladesh's interim government has requested an additional $3 billion in support from the IMF.
The IMF also acknowledged the positive role played by the formation of Bangladesh’s interim government, noting its impact on stabilizing the country's political and security situation, which has contributed to a gradual economic recovery.
Despite the challenges, the IMF expressed its continued commitment to Bangladesh. 'We remain a steadfast partner, fully committed to supporting Bangladesh and its people,' said Papageorgiou. He further stated that the IMF will work closely with the authorities under the existing programme to advance reforms that aim to maintain macroeconomic stability, create jobs, strengthen institutions, and promote sustainable and equitable growth.
