Bangladesh revokes ban on hilsa export to India, allows 3000 tonne shipment

Bangladesh's interim government on Saturday withdrew its ban on the export of Hilsa fish to India and announced that it will export 3,000 tonnes of Hilsa during the upcoming Durga Puja festival, which will take place from October 9 to 13.

The ban had been imposed earlier this month to ensure an adequate domestic supply of hilsa. However, in response to appeals from exporters the Bangladeshi government decided to allow a limited export under specific conditions for the festival.
'Approval has been granted to export 3,000 tonnes of hilsa to India, meeting the stipulated requirements for the upcoming Durga Puja,' the commerce ministry stated.
According to Bangladeshi officials, the country had, in 2023, allowed 79 companies to export total 4,000 tonnes of hilsa to India, its largest immediate neighbour.
Since placing an initial ban on hilsa exports in 2012, Bangladesh has allowed limited shipments each year from early September until the end of Durga Puja as a gesture of goodwill.
