World Bank to provide financial support to Bangladesh

The World Bank could provide a total of 2 billion US dollar in support to Bangladesh in the current fiscal year 2024-2025, which would include budget support and project assistance, said Martin Raiser, vice president for South Asia at the World Bank.

Raiser shared this information after meeting with Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed. He noted that the final decision on the loan will be made at the World Bank's board meeting, but the possibility of extending 2 billion US dollar in aid is currently under consideration. 'A portion of this funding will be allocated as budget support, while the remainder will go toward key projects in the health and energy sectors. Additional funds could also be made available for other projects based on the needs of the Bangladesh government,' Raiser explained.
He added that the World Bank is exploring potential contributions from its International Development Association (IDA) fund.
Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed mentioned that the discussions with the World Bank covered several key topics, including budget support, healthcare, energy, fertilizer imports, and food security. The meeting also addressed post-flood recovery efforts and the Rohingya refugee crisis.
Ahmed emphasized the World Bank’s positive stance on these issues, noting that the areas requiring support have been clearly identified. He further stated that the World Bank will coordinate with other organizations to address Bangladesh’s needs.
