Bangladesh is an inspiration to many in green building segment
Bangladesh has emerged as a significant source of inspiration for nations worldwide, particularly in the realm of green building practices, according to a high-ranking official from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), the organization responsible for bestowing Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) certification.
A notable milestone for Bangladesh is its distinction as the global leader in the number of green garment factories, boasting an impressive 209 establishments with LEED certificates. Among these, 79 hold platinum ratings, 116 are gold-rated, 10 have silver distinctions, and the remaining establishments are recognized for their green initiatives.
Remarkably, the world's highest-rated green building, SM Sourcing, achieving an outstanding score of 106 out of 110 points, is situated in Bangladesh. This accomplishment reinforces the country's commitment to sustainable and environmentally conscious construction.
Bangladesh has also solidified its position as the frontrunner in LEED-certified garment factories, with 54 of the top 100 and 18 of the top 20 green factories located within its borders. This achievement resonates not only in Southeast Asia and South Asia but has also become a topic of frequent discussion in the Western world.
Santanu Dutta Gupta, USGBC Faculty and Associate Director of Market Development at the Green Building Council Institute (GBCI), highlights that Bangladesh's success in the green building sector has transcended regional boundaries, garnering attention globally.
The country's ascendancy as the global champion in green garment factories has not only enhanced its image but has also attracted significant business from international clothing retailers and brands, diverting work orders away from other nations. Bangladesh's commitment to environmentally sustainable practices is not only admirable but also serves as a beacon for others aspiring to make meaningful strides in the green building arena.
