Musk-led DOGE cuts US funding worth $750m in Bangladesh, India, Nepal and other countries

The US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, has announced the cancellation of several US-funded international projects, including initiatives aimed at strengthening Bangladesh’s political landscape and boosting voter turnout in India.

Among the terminated programs is a $29 million initiative focused on enhancing Bangladesh’s political framework. According to Democracy International, the Strengthening Political Landscape in Bangladesh (SPL) program—previously funded by USAID and DFID—was designed to build political party capacity, improve party-constituent relationships, and reduce political violence. The project, originally set to run from 2017 to 2024, has now been scrapped.
In India, a 21 million US dollar initiative aimed at increasing voter participation has also been canceled.
The funding cuts were announced just a day after US President Donald Trump met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss strengthening bilateral ties.
