New direct shipping route boosts trade between Bangladesh and Pakistan
Over 1,000 containers have been transported between Bangladesh and Pakistan since October through the newly established direct shipping route, as per port operator DP World.
This direct connection has significantly reduced transit times by more than 50%, streamlining regional trade by removing the need for transshipment, Gulf News reported.
The route is part of a collaborative effort between Dubai-based DP World and NLC, designed to enhance trade links among six countries. The service connects ports in Port Klang (Malaysia), Jebel Ali (UAE), Karachi (Pakistan), Chittagong (Bangladesh), Belawan (Indonesia), and Mundra (India).
The inaugural journey of the route, which began on October 30, carried 304 containers directly from Karachi to Chittagong.
'The direct shipping link eliminates the transshipment process, providing an efficient 11-day transit time between Karachi and Chittagong, resulting in faster deliveries and lower logistics expenses,' stated DP World.
The demand for this route is evident, as the second shipment saw over twice the number of containers transported compared to the first voyage. This highlights the increasing reliance on the service for trade in the region.
